Sounds of the Season: Sturgis Winter Concerts 2016

winter-concert-2016-1Congratulations to all of the performers in the Sturgis Winter Concerts for East and West campuses.  Sturgis families were treated to spirited concerts including wide-ranging selections such as Bittersweet Symphony, Lovers Waltz It was great to see the quality of performances, school spirit and support students show for one another shine throughout. You all should be so proud of what you accomplished.

Sturgis West Winter Concert Challenge

Little did anyone know when the West Winter Concert was scheduled for December 13 that it would follow a flood at West on December 10 which necessitated West Campus to move into temporary classrooms at the crowdHyannis Resort and Conference Center on the day of the concert. Planning and rehearsing for a concert is challenging enough without the distractions of floods and moving!

Following the concert, West Music Teacher Elisabeth Moore said, ” It was a really beautiful night in the midst of such difficulty, the kids give me so much energy and they make it SO worth it.”

We are happy to share the following performances with you. Students have been working inside and outside of class time to produce the performances you will be seeing tonight. Thank you for supporting the Arts Department and Sturgis West.

winter-concert-poster-2016-1East Campus Winter Concert

This year, “caring” was chosen as a theme for our winter concert at Sturgis East. This theme was chosen for several reasons, the first of which is because it is one of the IB learner profile traits that is part of the mission of our school. All of the students strive to integrate these traits into their lives – inside and outside of the classroom. The other traits include; thinker, knowledgeable, inquirer, communicator, principled, open-minded, risk-taker, balanced, and reflective. Together, the IB program believes these traits will allow the students to be transformed into excellent life long learners and human beings. After all, school is not just about tests and grades!

And so, over the past two months music students have discussed what being caring means at Sturgis, in the music department, and outside of school. Students came to realize that caring is a thought that often results in an action that shows compassion towards another human being (or object/place like the piano/music room!). Caring is a quality that really allows us to step into another person’s shoes and consider ways to improve how they are feeling. The holiday seasons is the perfect time to consider how to care about one another and so our music selections in this concert focused on reflecting on how to be caring in a variety of ways – including how to approach gift giving, how to take advantage of every moment with those you love, and to be sure not to forget to care for those outside of your family. We are so happy that so many students, parents, and staff members chose to join us for this special event.
