Home Port (Volume 2: Summer 2013)

Welcome aboard the Summer 2013 voyage of Soundings.  As we watch the tides turn, we wish our colleagues and the Class of 2013 well as they head off on new adventures. Ebb tides bring a feeling of nostalgia when we say goodbye to students and colleagues who have helped shape Sturgis. Some of them will stay close to home port; others are heading as far as Germany, Abu Dhabi and China. Fortunately, the cycle of life continues with a new wave of 180 freshmen and 19 faculty members heading our way.

One goal of Sturgis Soundings Magazine is to provide you with a window through which you can see the vibrant “IB for All” school culture within and beyond the walls of Sturgis. We hope you will also be able to notice the transformative power of education.

I was inspired recently by a speech Malala Yousafzai gave at the United Nations on her 16th birthday, July 12, 2013. Malala had been shot in the head by extremists who were trying to end her campaign for girl’s education in Pakistan. Instead of silencing her, the attack had the opposite effect. She said, “Weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage were born…Let us pick up our books and our pens…one child, one teacher, one book and one pen can change the world. Education is the only solution.”  [1]

As I read her speech, I thought how very fortunate we are to have educational freedom. I see it reflected in many of the summer Soundings articles. Take a look at “CAS! Creativity, Action Service” and “2013 Extended Essays.” In these articles, students describe their individual service and personal research projects. They not only have the freedom to explore, they are encouraged to follow their passion. As Jim Buckheit says in his introduction to “2013 Extended Essays,” their projects “can be a defining moment in a student’s academic life,” helping them discover who they are and what they are capable of achieving.

Thanks to many contributors, our summer issue includes an interesting cargo of  news, photographs, essays, poetry and art. Sturgis Soundings Magazine is a venue where the Sturgis community including students, alumni, families, faculty and trustees can stay connected.   Like all ventures at Sturgis, Soundings is a collaborative effort. We invite you to participate. Send us your news and suggestions for future issues.

Bon Voyage!
